Homemade Apple and Sweet Potato Dog Treat Recipe
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease or Pam 2 cookie sheets.
- I tripled the recipe and it makes approximately 70 cookies.
Ingredients for Apple and Sweet Potato Dog Treat Recipe:
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1 coarsely chopped apple
- 1/3 of a sweet potato (coarsely chopped)
- 1 beaten egg
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 cup cold water
Blend flour and cornmeal in large mixing bowl, and then add apple, sweet potato, egg, oil, brown sugar, and water until well blended. Flour your counter top and roll out dough to desired thickness. Just less than 1 inch thick worked for me.
Chop apples and sweet potato into large pieces, then slowly pulsed them in your food processor. Not only is this a time saver, but it creates similar sized apple/sweet potato chunks (I did not puree) which adds some color and interest.
Cut cookies to desired shape and size. Place dog cookies on baking sheet and bake 35 minutes. After baking, turn oven off and leave cookies inside for another 30-45 minutes until crisp.
Once crisp, remove dog cookies from oven and let cool. Store in reusable zipper bags or airtight containers and freeze to preserve freshness.
Note: Because of the amount of cookies I was making I did not have time to turn the oven off and leave cookies inside for another 30-45 minutes until crisp. They turned out crisp on the outside and tender on the inside.
